The Physicians & Surgeons Outdoor Orientation Program (P-SOOP) is an optional 3 day hike in the Catskill Mountains for incoming first year Columbia medical students. It will be a fun opportunity to interact with current P&S students who will lead the trips, jump start friendships with your classmates, ease your way into life at medical school, and receive basic training in wilderness first-aid.
P-SOOP was founded in 2012 by P&S students who had participated in similar pre-orientation programs before college, were enthusiastic about the outdoors, and wanted an excuse to hang out with and get to know incoming students. There are 32 spots available to students and sign up is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Use the "registration" and "forms" tabs above to sign up and complete the required documents. Please note, you must register for your general orientation pass along with or before you can register for P-SOOP.
Mid June 2017: Sign up opens to incoming P&S Medical students
Early July 2017: Deadline for sign up (or until all spots are filled- first come, first serve)
Tuesday, August 8, 2017: Participants arrive on campus
Wednesday, August 9 -11, 2017: P-SOOP Trip
Sunday, August 13, 2017: P&S Medical New Student Orientation begins
Individual cost of participating in P-SOOP was $175 for the 2016 trip. This includes the cost of gear rental (hiking packs, sleeping bags, water bottles, tents, etc), food and supplies for the trip, and transportation to and from Catskill State Park.
BARD HALL HOUSING
If you will be living in Bard Hall, please note that your move-in date is listed as the Friday you return from P-SOOP and you'll get your key through the Housing Office upon your return. If you would like to be considered for early move-in to settle in before the P-SOOP trip, indicate so in the housing section of the registration form. Please note you are responsible for the extra days included in the early move-in and we cannot guarantee that your room will be available for early move-in. P-SOOP will handle all correspondence with the Office of Housing Services, so please do not email them directly with P-SOOP related questions. For those of you waiting to move into Bard after the trip, there will be space available for you to lock up your belongings while you are away for P-SOOP.
If you will be living off campus or in other Columbia housing (Towers), please arrange your move-in accordingly. Remember that the trip returns on Friday, so you will have all day Saturday and Sunday morning to take care of business before orientation begins on Sunday afternoon.
