The AMA Medical Student Section (MSS) is the largest organization of medical students in the nation, with over 48,000 members.  It offers future physicians unparalleled opportunities in health policy, community service, and leadership development.

Policy

At county, state, and national levels, the MSS serves as the voice for medical students, with formal voting power in the governing bodies of both the Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) and the AMA.  A representative body, the MSS exists to advocate for the ideas of its student members.  To this end, the MSS offers students myriad opportunities to express new ideas, research and develop them, and ultimately influence

health policy. Through the MSS, students have achieved real results, including the smoking ban on US domestic airplane flights, and, most recently, the defeat of a proposed $15,000 tuition increase at SUNY medical schools.  Respected by the AMA's physician leaders, student members are routinely lauded as "the conscience of the AMA."  P&S students have attained top positions throughout the MSS, and regularly participate in state and national conferences.

Service

This year, for its national service project, the MSS is working to reduce childhood obesity.  Our P&S chapter will contribute to this national effort through outreach in the Washington Heights community.  We will be designing a fitness workshop for local elementary school children, and surveying local popular restaurants to identify healthy options on menus.

Leadership

Through seminars, guest lectures, conferences, and social events, our P&S chapter offers students several ways to learn more about health systems and connect with fellow future physicians.
